Eye Health: For Over 60’s | Opticians in Manchester

Proper eye care from the right healthcare professional can help with early detection and treatment of any developing eye health problem. We highlight useful links to opticians in Manchester; information on free NHS eye tests for over 60’s and insight into your eligibility for free eyewear.

The most common eye diseases

There are 3 main eye diseases adults experience in their later years;

  • Glaucoma – Is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged.
  • Cataracts – Is when the lens, a transparent disc inside your eye, develops cloud patches. Over time the patches develop and cause blurry and misty vision. Cataracts can lead to blindness.
  • Macular degeneration – Is a problem with your retina. It happens when a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. With this disease, you can lose your central vision. You may find it harder to see fine details, whether you are looking at something close or far away. Your peripheral (side) vision will still be normal.

Eye tests by an optician don’t just check whether you need glasses – they also check on the health of your eyes.

An optician can detect eye diseases at an early stage, usually before you even notice any changes. An eye test checks your vision straight ahead as well as peripheral vision.

How often should I get my eyes tested?

Looking after elderly eyes

Eye conditions can be prevented or slowed down by making some simple lifestyle changes.

Get your eyes tested every 2 years or as often as your optometrist recommends

This is perhaps the most important way to look after your eyes. An optician’s check-up is not just to check your glasses are the right prescription, but also to diagnose eye diseases.

The good news is that if you’re over 60-years-old, you can have a free NHS eye (sight) test as often as you need one.

Have a well-balanced diet

Maintaining a well-balanced diet will improve your overall health. By including specific foods into your diet you will approve your eyesight and eye health. Leafy greens such as spinach are packed with antioxidants that lower the risk of diseases such as macular degeneration. Integrate oily fats (which are commonly found in fish and nuts) into your diet. This can help reduce the risk of dry eye syndrome, a common condition experienced by seniors.

Quit smoking

Smoking increases your risk of developing eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Kicking this habit is hard; however, many online resources can help you get started. WebMD identifies 13 of the best quit-smoking tips that can help you make a positive lifestyle change.

Improve the lighting in your home

NHS Live Well highlights that we need three times as much light to see well when you’re over 60 than we do at 20. Utilise natural lighting and keep curtains drawn back during daylight hours. You should also have a lamp directed at where you’re working and make sure you have suitable overhead lights.

Am I entitled to free glasses?

You may be eligible for funding towards a new set of eyewear through one of the following government-funded schemes.
