Day in the life of a Healthcare Assistant
We need kind, friendly, strong and reliable carers to help clients in the Trafford area live independently
Day in the Life of a Healthcare Assistant
Our core hours are from 7am-10pm. Our morning/day shifts start at 7am and usually finish between 1:30pm and 4pm. Our evening shifts then start at 4pm and usually finish at 10pm.
At interview and application stage, we discuss staff availability, to suit the needs of the business as well as the individual.
We ask members of staff to be available to work alternate weekends too as this is the fairest way to ensure our clients receive a quality service 7-days a week.
Before working independently, all new members of staff, regardless of past experience, are subject to a full training induction as well as two-weeks’ worth of shadowing alongside an existing experienced member of staff.
After this, we trust that you will feel comfortable completing a shift independently with the support of the management team.
The office on-call phone is also staff by members of the office management team 24/7. So, if staff require support, they are only a call or text away.
As the vast majority of our jobs are posted out in the community, staff are required to have a full licence and vehicle. Mileage is paid for and clients are put into rounds locally to reduce travelling, however, members of staff must be confident drivers to travel to and from clients within the community.
The scheduled calls with clients can range from 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 1 hour onwards. The time spent with clients is based on the needs and requirements of the individual. For example, if a client only requires some lunch making and to have their medications taken, chances are that 30 minutes will be sufficient. However, if more tasks are required to be completed, like personal care, then we will always assess the situation to ensure a quality service can still be provided in the allocated time.
Therefore, the time not spent with clients will be spent driving, locally, to meet members of the local community who require our support.
All of the above tasks are listed on our PASS system for each individual client. PASS is a digital system that is installed on our company mobile phones. The PASS system enables tasks to be ticked and completed as they are done. The PASS system also holds all client details including the care plan, outcome sheet and list of tasks and activities.
Below is a list of core duties our staff usually do on a daily basis:
- Personal care – assisting a client with activities around personal hygiene and cleanliness.
- Light domestic chores & duties – Assisting with small cleaning tasks, such as vacuuming.
- Medications – Either prompting a client to take their medications or, dispensing medications from a blister pack.
- Companionship – Chatting and reminiscing with clients about past times. At times, we also take clients out into the community; going to the shops or local garden centre etc.
- Food & Nutrition – Assisting clients with making food and drinks.
As you are out in the community, delivering the previously noted tasks, the office team will be here to support you. Whether it’s a medication query or general question, you can call or text the office team who will be there to support you.
