Looking Into The Core Duties Of A Care Assistant

Unlike a number of job roles in different industry sectors that are fairly self-explanatory with clear responsibilities, a care assistant job role isn’t quite as easy to put into words. Although as a carer you are responsible for caring for your clients, there is much more to this job than people initially realise and the care you provide on a daily basis to clients can differ quite significantly.

No two days are the same in the care industry and an average day for a care assistant will consist of completing various different tasks relating to their clients’ individual needs. If you think that you’re well-suited to a care assistant role and you’re interested in applying for a job with a care agency but you’d like to learn more about what this particular role entails before doing so, keep reading today. Below we have looked into the core duties that the vast majority of care assistants working in the community will carry out on a day-to-day basis.

Personal care

Many of the clients that you work with in the community will require some form of personal care and this type of care involves assisting clients with activities such as washing and dressing. All activities surrounding personal hygiene and cleanliness need to be carried out in both a discreet and professional manner, and it is important to ensure that the client feels comfortable and respected at all times. The level of personal care required will differ from client to client.

Light domestic chores

Throughout the day, you will assist clients with a number of small cleaning tasks too and domestic care is commonly required. You may need to help with tasks such as; dusting, vacuuming, changing bed linen, laundry, ironing and cleaning the kitchen, and you may even need to help with pet care too. Helping to keep a client’s home clean, tidy and comfortable can have a positive effect on their health and well being, so it is vitally important.

Medication support

It isn’t uncommon for the clients you see in the community to take medication and you may be required to prompt them to take this or to dispense it for them from a blister pack. Support with prescribed medications or prescribed creams, ointments and drops will help to ensure that your clients remain healthy and that they’re avoiding hospital stays. Correct training will always be provided should you be required to provide medication support though.

Companionship and social care

A huge part of a care assistant’s job role is companionship care and you will be helping to reduce loneliness by chatting with your clients over a cup of tea, for example. Feeling lonely is linked to a number of health conditions and the time you spend with your clients can be more beneficial than you may realise. You may also be required to provide social support and help your clients run errands, go to the shops, attend appointments or visit family and friends.

Food and nutrition support

When you visit your clients, depending on the time of your visit, you might need to help them prepare and cook different meals too. Ensuring that your clients are eating and drinking enough to stay healthy and that they’re getting all of the nutrients they need is so important. Support with meal planning is also very common and you may need to shop for weekly groceries for your client before your visit, ensuring that their cupboards are full of everything they need.
